The natural hair movement is sweeping the Nation and a lot of women are ditching their relaxers and chemical straightening kits to embrace the trend.
The natural hair has gained momentum and even adopted by some notable celebrities example include, Omoni Oboli, Nse Ikpe, Uche Jumbo , Yvonne Nelson, Juliet Ibrahim, Yemi Alade, Adesua Etomi , Kate Henshaw etc. even most lovely brides wear their natural hair on their wedding day and it looks glamorous for the special occasion.
This current trend isn’t exactly new as history tells us that this look was especially popular back in the 60’s and 70’s. The afro look was becoming more mainstream being worn by even Non-Blacks and loosing much of its originality. In the 80’s, the natural hair movement ultimately came to an end.
So why is natural hair making such a come back?
According to Effgnobong John, she feels delighted wearing her natural hair and would advise her kids to stay natural.
Mary Godwin, responded that natural hair makes her unique and also added that natural is a bit challenging as natural is not easy to manage and style compared to relaxed hair.
Blessing Bassey said she didn’t join natural because of trend but due to her losing her husband, she had to cut her hair to fulfill the funeral rites.
Charlene Brown said natural hair was unappreciated before but now is more of ways of life as people have made it a lifestyle to stay natural.
Nani Akuto shares her view that natural hair has made blacks accept who they are and embrace their kinky hair texture other than wearing weavons and all sort of hair extension. Also that natural hair has generated a lot of conversation and creating a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs to explore.
